Judges included Steffen Schindler from the German Wine Institute, Mainz; Ben Edwards, President of Sommeliers Australia; Jeni Port, Journalist; Ian Hongwell, senior wine maker @ Peter Lehmann Wines; Brent Marris, Winemaker New Zealand and Toni Paterson, Master of Wine.
GILBERTS MOUNT BARKER RIESLING 2010 IS NOW RANKED IN THE TOP TEN RIESLINGS OF THE WORLD FOR 2010 (Canberra International Wine Challenge p5 results book)
This is a great achievement and made all the sweeter as Gilberts are celebrating 25 years of growing Riesling this year.
The initial planting of Riesling & Chardonnay was made in 1985.
The beginning of a great journey. Matthew Gilbert flew to Canberra to receive the trophy and a handshake from Mr Wolf Blass AM the International Riesling Ambassador.
Gilberts Riesling quickly gained an enviable reputation amongst the wine loving community for a wine that displays the terroir of the Mount Barker Region.
In 2000, the Gilberts Riesling was awarded three trophies at The Qantas Mount Barker Wine Show. The first time in the shows history that a Riesling was awarded "The Best Wine of Western Australia".
